By Eoghan O’Reilly
I wish I was in Carrickfergus
Only for nights there in Ballygran.
I would swim over the deepest ocean
Only to be there, my love and I.
But the sea is deep and I cannot swim over
Or neither have I the wings to fly.
I would engage with a handsome boatman
To ferry me over to my love and die
And in Kilkenny it is reported
They have marble stones there as black as ink
With gold and silver I would support her
Ah but I’ll sing no more till I get a drink
I’m drunk today and I’m seldom sober
A handsome rover from town to town
Ah, but I’m sing now and I’ll soon be dying
So come all ye young men and lay me down.
